Education for Health’s
Spirometry for Practice module
is written by experts and
endorsed by the Association for
Respiratory Technology and
Physiology (ARTP)
and British Thoracic Society
(BTS). Education for Health will
provide a
certificate of completion. By
studying for this module you
will learn the necessary skills
to conduct spirometric
testing safely, effectively and
reliably and it will enable you
recognise the
importance of accurate and
reproducible results which can
be safely interpreted by
another Health Care
Professional. You will be able
to assess your patients pre-test
with confidence and ensure that
spirometry is safely and
effectively performed. You
will cover the following areas
when studying for this module:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Patho-physiology of lung
disease
- Flow and volume
measuring spirometer devices
- Cleaning and equipment
maintenance
- Performance of dynamic
lung volume
- Trouble shooting and
pitfalls
- Reference values
This module will give you
the knowledge and skills to:
- Obtain technically
acceptable measurements
of dynamic lung volumes
- Recognise normal and
abnormal patterns to
include problems in
obtaining
results.
- Understand the
relationship between
patho-physiological
changes in the lung
and measurements
obtained from dynamic
lung volumes
- Define and explain
common terms used in
measuring dynamic lung
volumes
- Identify the
essential pre-test
requirements and correct
patient testing
techniques
- Compare the key
different types of
spirometer available to
perform
dynamic studies and be
able to explain the main
principles of their
operation
- Explain the
rationale for regular
cleaning and equipment
maintenance and
identify correct methods
for this.
